previously reported<\/a> on the planned Unite the Clans rally, which urged supporters to meet at Glasgow Green in the city centre at noon today, July 25. At 11am, a counter-protest organised by the campaign group Stand Up To Racism kicked off at the park entrance, McLennan Arch.<\/p>\nFootage shows groups clashing with objects being thrown as violence erupted. Separating the two sides is a fence, which some far-right protesters reportedly trying to jump over to intimidate counter crowds, to which they retaliate by chanting “Nazi s*** off our streets”.<\/p>\n
In footage shared with Glasgow Live, an unidentified object is launched into the air, aimed at counter demonstrators. We spoke with an eye-witness who said: “Tensions are definitely high between the anti immigration side and counter protestors, the fence around Glasgow Green is separating them as well as a police line on the grass.<\/p>\n
“There’s definitely been some aggression from the anti-immigration side, I’ve seen drinks thrown at a police van and a fight that appeared to be between people from the opposing sides.<\/p>\n
“There’s been a lot of verbal abuse thrown from both sides. I honestly did get scared when they started jumping the fence and running into the crowd but police managed to disperse that quickly.”<\/p>\n
Yesterday, Chief Superintendent Emma Croft said: “Our role is to facilitate legitimate protest, protect the public and respond appropriately to any incidents that may arise.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople have the right to express their views lawfully and we will act to keep people safe, protect communities and reduce the impact within the city.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe continue to engage with organisers and work with our partners as we plan for events. Our combined focus being on supporting lawful activity and maintaining public safety.<\/p>\n
