But, there are two types of portable air conditioners. A \u2018single hose\u2019 and a \u2018dual-hose\u2019.<\/p>\n Katie Lillywhite, air treatment expert at AO.com<\/a> tells Metro: \u2018Single hose air conditioners have one hose to vent hot air from the appliance. This works by drawing air from your room, cooling it through its system then venting this out.<\/p>\n \u2018[They] lack a bit of power to cool particularly hot rooms.<\/p>\n \u2018Dual hose air conditions have a lot more power \u2013 one hose to pull in outdoor air and the other to vent this back out.\u2019<\/p>\n How do I set up my portable air conditioner?<\/p>\n Portable aircon units look a bit bonkers, as you need to put the exhaust hose outside via a vent or in most cases, a window.<\/p>\n Jamie Hillard, of Heatable.co.uk, tells Metro his tips for installation.<\/p>\n \u2018Installation is key and the exhaust hose must be sealed properly at the window to prevent warm air from coming back in. The exhaust hose needs the shortest, straightest route possible to the outside. Long, kinked, or poorly positioned hoses reduce performance because the hot exhaust air can radiate heat back into the room.<\/p>\n \u2018The window opening also needs to be sealed properly. A proper window sealing kit or rigid panel makes a noticeable difference.\u2019<\/p>\n Most units come with a kit, or you can by window sealing kits for portable air conditioners online, with heatershop selling them for only \u00a319.98. You can also find them on Amazon<\/a>.<\/p>\n But one Metro reader has resorted to \u2018sealing\u2019 the gap with a giant bit of taped plastic sheeting, noting that the fitting kits are \u2018quite fiddly\u2019. She says the result is imperfect, but the room still gets significantly cooler. <\/p>\n It\u2019s not a look for Interior Design Masters though\u2026<\/p>\n \t\t Figuring out what you need for your house depends on various factors such as the room size and height, the size and condition of the windows, the insulation for the house, the direction the room faces and even the type of room. For example, a conservatory or loft will need more strength than a bedroom of similar size. <\/p>\n \u2018A really common mistake is buying an undersized unit and if the unit is too small, it will run almost continuously, using more electricity but still struggling to bring the room temperature down,\u2019 says Jamie.<\/p>\n To find the best option, you need to use a BTU calculator, which stands for \u2018British Thermal Unit\u2019 and this measures how much energy something has.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tHow many BTUs should your air conditioner be?\t\t\t<\/p>\n Glow Green have a helpful chart<\/a> for figuring out what BTU you need. <\/p>\n 100\u2013150 sq. ft. \/ 9\u201314 sq. m.: 8,000 BTU <\/p>\n 150\u2013250 sq. ft. \/ 14\u201323 sq. m.: 9,000 BTU<\/p>\n 250\u2013300 sq. ft. \/ 23\u201328 sq. m.: 10,000 BTU <\/p>\n 300\u2013350 sq. ft. \/ 28\u201333 sq. m.: 12,000 BTU <\/p>\n 350\u2013400 sq. ft. \/ 33\u201337 sq. m.: 14,000 BTU <\/p>\n 400\u2013450 sq. ft. \/ 37\u201342 sq. m.: 18,000 BTU <\/p>\n 450\u2013650 sq. ft. \/ 42\u201360 sq. m.: 25,000 BTU<\/p>\n How much will it cost?<\/p>\n \u2018Running costs depend on the size of the space, insulation, glazing, solar gain, tariff, and how aggressively the system is used,\u2019 Jamie says.<\/p>\n \u2018The biggest mistake is setting the target temperature too low. Like most tech, there are eco mode options and energy ratings. Plus, if you have solar panels, you can power your units that way. But even if you cannot, Andrew Sissons, the sustainable future director at the charity Nesta,<\/a> says people shouldn\u2019t feel guilty for using them, acknowlidng they are a \u2018last resort\u2019 for many people.<\/p>\n Additionally, Nicole Miranda,\u00a0a sustainable cooling researcher and carbon reduction manager for the University of Oxford, notes that they can be vital in keeping vulnerable people safe in dangerous weather.<\/p>\n Though Earth.org do report <\/a>that air conditioners are worsening global warming, they advise setting them to 26\u00b0C instead 24\u00b0C, which consumes around 30% less energy. They reccomend regular cleaning and replacing of the filter too so it does not use more energy, and opting for models with a high Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER).<\/p>\n \t\t Though the upfront cost will be a few hundred pounds, and you could be spending approximately up to \u00a38 a day, hot weather can cause dehydration, overheating and heatstroke.<\/p>\n According to the head of the World Health Organization (WHO), the heatwave in Europe has already been linked to 1,300 deaths. <\/p>\n People over 65, babies and children under 5, and those with pre-existing health conditions are espiecally vulnerable.<\/p>\n Steve Charnock<\/a>, Audience Writer for Metro, who recently bought a 9,000BTU Ariston unit from B&Q for \u00a3225, says he had his on \u2018constantly\u2019 all of last week, and claims it \u2018pretty much saved my life\u2019.<\/p>\n Though, he notes \u2018I\u2019ll find out next month if it\u2019s also pretty much bankrupted me\u2019 refencing the daily running costs.<\/p>\n But in comparison, according to Checkatrade, <\/a>an average, a 12000 BTU wall-mounted unit costs around \u00a3750, plus \u00a31,150 for installation and air conditioning engineers typically charge around \u00a3280 \u2013 \u00a3720 per day.<\/p>\n So a portable air conditioning unit is far cheaper and keeps you cool, sane and most importantly safe.<\/p>\n \t\t\t\tCheap and easy ways to keep your home cool when installing aircon isn\u2019t an option\t\t\t<\/p>\n No aircon? No problem.<\/p>\n Put a bottle filled with ice and a tablespoon of salt into your freezer, and the salt will help the freezing point of the water go even lower, creating colder ice.<\/a><\/p>\n Once you\u2019ve done that, put the bottles in front of the fan. <\/p>\n As the ice melts, the breeze from the fan will pick up the cool air coming from the ice\u2019s surface, recreating a cool breeze, similar to an air conditioning unit.<\/p>\n Plus, a room will stay cooler if curtains and blinds are closed; even better if they\u2019re the blackout variety.<\/p>\n An open window will also let hot air into the house, which, if you have a fan on the go, completely defeats the point.<\/p>\n Do you have a story you\u2019d like to share?
