This strong showing helped mitigate increased provisions the banking group made to cover potential bad debts. <\/p>\n

The bank<\/a> posted a pre-tax profit of \u00a36.1 billion for the six months to June, a notable increase from \u00a35.2 billion recorded in the corresponding period last year, and surpassing analyst forecasts of \u00a35.9 billion. <\/p>\n

The financial institution attributed its strengthened balance sheet to improved income across key divisions. <\/p>\n

Its UK bank saw an 8 per cent year-on-year rise to \u00a34.5 billion, while the investment bank’s income climbed 11 per cent to \u00a38 billion. <\/p>\n

This boost for the investment banking arm was fuelled by increased investor engagement in global markets, higher income from equities, and an uptick in fees, according to Barclays. <\/p>\n

It follows a period of heightened volatility in the world’s financial markets in response to the US-Israel’s war with Iran<\/a> while there has also been increased dealmaking with a string of buyers snapping up UK-listed firms this year. <\/p>\n

However, the banking giant said its credit impairment charges for bad loans increased to \u00a31.4 billion for the half-year period, from \u00a31.1 billion the year before. <\/p>\n

This was largely driven by a one-off hit of \u00a3228 million relating to a single company affecting its investment banking operations in the first quarter of 2026. <\/p>\n

It was understood that this referred to the collapse of UK property lender Market Financial Solutions (MFS) earlier this year amid allegations of fraud. <\/p>\n

In June, Barclays<\/a> cemented its commitment to London<\/a>‘s financial heart and the future of office work by acquiring its Canary Wharf<\/a> global headquarters in a \u00a3750 million deal. <\/p>\n
