{"id":93909,"date":"2026-07-30T13:53:08","date_gmt":"2026-07-30T13:53:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/93909\/"},"modified":"2026-07-30T13:53:08","modified_gmt":"2026-07-30T13:53:08","slug":"gsk-announces-400m-investment-in-cambridge-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/93909\/","title":{"rendered":"GSK Announces \u00a3400m Investment in Cambridge Hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is planning to invest \u00a3400m in a major new science hub in Cambridge as it looks to increase its pace of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pharmacy.biz\/gsk-cancer-drug-trial-mo-rez\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">drug development<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This decision will also bolster the Government\u2019s efforts to turn the 100-mile corridor between Oxford and Cambridge into an economic powerhouse.<\/p>\n<p>Prime Minister Andy Burnham has termed GSK&#8217;s investment was \u201ca vote of confidence in British business\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The Cambridge hub also houses rival AstraZeneca, Addenbrooke&#8217;s and Royal Papworth hospitals.<\/p>\n<p>GSK hopes to build its links with research hospitals in Cambridge and benefit from proximity to Cambridge and Oxford universities, and London.<\/p>\n<p>However, this move will end the pharmaceutical major&#8217;s 50-year relationship with Stevenage, Hertfordshire, which was previously its main UK research base.<\/p>\n<p>The staff will move in phases, with the Stevenage site earmarked for closure in 2029.<\/p>\n<p>GSK will also upgrade its existing R&amp;D laboratories at Ware in Hertfordshire, and move some employees there.<\/p>\n<p>The company said its new site in Cambridge, which is currently under construction, will feature labs and infrastructure to support research in oncology, respiratory, hepatology, vaccines and HIV.<\/p>\n<p>The company has been accelerating investment in cancer drugs after it acquired US-based Nuvalent in June.<\/p>\n<p>Three of the seven drugs identified for faster development were cancer medicines.<\/p>\n<p>GSK has also launched a \u00a31.9 billion cost-savings effort to help fund the drugmaker&#8217;s expanded late-stage study roster.<\/p>\n<p>The savings will come from AI-led technology shifts, streamlining support services and supply chains, and reallocating resources to specialty medicines.<\/p>\n<p>The restructuring is a major step by CEO Luke Miels to reassure investors that GSK can navigate a looming patent cliff for its blockbuster HIV drug, dolutegravir, between 2028 and 2030.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is planning to invest \u00a3400m in a major new science hub in Cambridge as it looks&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":93910,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":"","_share_on_mastodon":"0"},"categories":[20784],"tags":[7786,40066,3384,25307,20785,3383],"class_list":["post-93909","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-gsk","tag-andy-burnham","tag-cambridge-science-hub","tag-cambridge-university","tag-glaxosmithkline","tag-gsk","tag-oxford-university"],"share_on_mastodon":{"url":"https:\/\/pubeurope.com\/@UnitedKingdom\/117009265961948037","error":""},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/93909","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=93909"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/93909\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/93910"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=93909"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=93909"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=93909"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
