font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;AI\u200b-\u200brelated inflation came back into view\u00a0in June,&#8221; Sriram says,\u00a0&#8220;albeit at about half its pace in the first few months of the year.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Inflation &#8220;has a memory problem&#8221;, the economist adds, with the computer software and accessories category\u00a0rebounding. &#8220;We expect a similar trend in the\u00a0coming months.&#8221; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;Consumption rose by 3.2%, with more than half of that increase due to a jump in spending on goods, probably driven by the huge round of income tax refunds in spring.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Pickering\u00a0highlights some snippets from the July minutes, including that while the MPC judged that &#8220;the risks to the inflation outlook are tilted to the upside relative to the central projection&#8221;, it also stressed that\u00a0there &#8220;remains scope for the outlook to change materially as events in the Middle East unfold&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">We wait for Donald to decide how our mortgage payments are going to look.\u00a0\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Indeed, Katy Stoves, investment manager at Mattioli Woods, says, with UK CPI remaining above the Bank&#8217;s 2% target, a hike at September&#8217;s meeting is &#8220;currently priced as a coin toss&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;For new Prime Minister Andy Burnham, it&#8217;s yet another headache landing in his in-tray before he&#8217;s barely had time to find the lights in No. 10.&#8221; Energy prices have spiked, reigniting concerns over a more lasting impact on inflation.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">He says the Bank was &#8220;starting from a relatively more favourable position&#8221; as energy prices had fallen back significantly in June, with inflation and wage data coming in lower than previously expected, along with the looser labour market also limiting the pass-through into broader domestic price pressures.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;These competing influences on inflation mean that interest rates will likely remain on hold for now.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;Globally, much depends on the duration and intensity of the renewed energy price shock. Closer to home, the Bank may also wait for greater clarity on the fiscal outlook as we head towards the new Chancellor&#8217;s first Budget in the Autumn.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Raj Badiani, economics director at S&amp;P Global Market Intelligence, says the &#8220;on-off&#8221; Middle East ceasefire &#8220;has helped to dissipate some of the global energy price shock&#8221; and so he\u00a0expects a lower peak in UK headline inflation over the coming months, &#8220;reducing pressure on the Bank of England to consider interest rate increases in the near term&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;Nevertheless, there remains a meaningful probability of a rate hike at either the September or November meeting, as the BoE continues to be concerned about volatility in the Gulf region and the upside risks to energy prices.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Scott Gardner, investment strategist at JP\u00a0Morgan Personal Investing: &#8220;Despite a rebound in global energy prices, the Bank of England left rates unchanged at 3.75% for a fifth straight meeting. So far, the inflationary impact of the US-Iran conflict appears to be more limited than some may have initially feared though the Bank expects inflation to kick up to 3.2% in the autumn.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Recent inflation moves have supported the holding of rates, but with\u00a0higher household energy bills from July likely to &#8220;cloud the inflation outlook&#8221;, Gardner notes that markets are currently pricing one to two rate hikes this year &#8211; &#8220;&#8221;but it is still too early to tell if these will materialise as energy prices remain volatile&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p>       12.29pm: What Mann wants         <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Catherine Mann is the person of interest today, after she changed her vote in favour of an interest rate hike.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">In the BoE&#8217;s policy summary, some comments from several members, including Mann, were provided.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;Most indicators of nominal conditions have continued to moderate, although near-term inflation estimates skirt the inflation attentiveness threshold at which research suggests stronger second-round effects, which would build on an inflation rate that has remained above target for five years,&#8221; the American economist wrote.\u00a0\u00a0  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">&#8220;That said, the key change in the environment for my decision is the collapse of the US-Iran memorandum of understanding, the widening of the Middle East conflict, and the associated volatility in energy prices.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">She notes that this &#8220;sporadic continuance&#8221;\u00a0of the Gulf conflict is transmitting &#8220;shocks and volatility&#8221; that she says will &#8220;affect expectations and price setting behaviours to impart an upward ratchet to CPI inflation&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Mann alludes to some theories that\u00a0the UK base rate should be higher than 3.75% to return inflation to the 2% target sustainably, while other research emphasises that &#8220;the costs of leaning against upside risks that fail to materialise would be smaller than the cost of leaning too little against upside risks&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Notwithstanding the current &#8220;moderately restrictive&#8221; financial conditions,she says,\u00a0&#8220;reinforcing policy credibility when faced with inflationary shocks implies that a 25 basis point increase in Bank Rate is appropriate at this time&#8221;.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">In non-economist English: she says inflation has been above target for ages, the US-Iran conflict could push energy prices higher, and Mann does not trust that businesses and workers will simply shrug it off.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none; font-style: normal; text-transform: none; text-align: inherit; font-variant-numeric: normal;\">Her prescription is a 0.25 percentage-point rise now \u2013 essentially an insurance premium against the Bank losing control of inflation again.  <\/p>\n<p>       12.18pm: BoE sees inflation risks, judges current rates appropriate         <\/p>\n<p class=\"text text-block paragraph text-left neo-font-paragraph-xl-reg  yf-18d6y07\" style=\"text-decoration: none;
