{"id":94457,"date":"2026-07-31T05:53:14","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T05:53:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/94457\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T05:53:14","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T05:53:14","slug":"devon-named-one-of-britains-riskiest-counties-for-cyclists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/94457\/","title":{"rendered":"Devon named one of Britain&#8217;s riskiest counties for cyclists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Devon has been named one of the riskiest counties in Great Britain for cyclists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">A new study by process safety consultancy Sigma-HSE ranked the county 18th out of 37 counties and county-level authorities, based on the proportion of road casualties involving cyclists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The analysis used Department for Transport figures, which showed that 7.28 per cent of Devon&#8217;s 1,662 recorded road casualties in 2024 were cyclists\u2014with 121 people affected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dr Dina Deifalla, Operations Manager at Sigma-HSE, said: &#8220;The cyclist share of casualties shows how much of the harm on a road network is landing on the people with the least protection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;In Devon, around one in 14 road casualties involve a cyclist, below the county average of 8.13 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;A low share is not the same as a safe network, and it often reflects how few people feel able to ride at all.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Cyclist safety moves with road design far more than with rider behaviour, and separated space with junctions rebuilt where collisions cluster does more than helmets, hi-vis and awareness campaigns.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Devon ranked second among the five South West counties, behind Gloucestershire at 11.49 per cent, but ahead of Dorset (7.13 per cent), Somerset (6.50 per cent), and Cornwall (5.91 per cent).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Devon has been named one of the riskiest counties in Great Britain for cyclists.
