{"id":94733,"date":"2026-07-31T13:05:11","date_gmt":"2026-07-31T13:05:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/94733\/"},"modified":"2026-07-31T13:05:11","modified_gmt":"2026-07-31T13:05:11","slug":"approval-for-chinas-mega-embassy-in-london-was-lawful-uk-court-rules-politics-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/94733\/","title":{"rendered":"Approval for China\u2019s mega embassy in London was lawful, UK court rules | Politics News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__subhead\">The 20,000-square-metre site in London is set to become the largest embassy complex in the UK by area.<\/p>\n<p>Published On 31 Jul 202631 Jul 2026<\/p>\n<p>A British court has ruled that the planned construction of a new Chinese \u201cmega\u201d embassy in central London can go forward, and dismissed a lawsuit pleading the contrary.<\/p>\n<p>The ruling by the High Court on Friday rejected the legal challenge brought earlier this month by The Royal Mint Court Residents\u2019 Association, which alleges that the embassy\u2019s development poses human rights risks to residents, including Chinese critics and dissidents.<\/p>\n<p>Recommended Stories list of 4 itemsend of list<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Two judges ruled remotely that the residents\u2019 \u201cclaims are \u2026 dismissed\u201d, saying the housing minister and the London district of Tower Hamlets had acted lawfully by granting planning permission in January.<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s plans to build the embassy on the site of the two-century-old Royal Mint Court, located near the Tower of London, were approved shortly before ex-Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited China.<\/p>\n<p>The residential association, which represents families and businesses in about 100 properties close to the proposed site, said the presence of the embassy could result in \u201cterror\u201d attacks, repression of protests, and claimed that the facility could be used to spy on and enforce \u201cdraconian\u201d Chinese laws on UK territory.<\/p>\n<p>The association further raised concerns about the risk of a fire, pointing out that the UK government would not be able to enforce British safety obligations because of diplomatic immunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cBeijing thinks this judgement is the final word. It isn\u2019t.
