Sing Tao, a Hong Kong newspaper, had reported on Tuesday that HSBC was merging the teams.

Under the changes, one of the heads of each function at the two banks has been elevated to sole leader, reporting directly to regional and global management, the source said. The changes happened in recent weeks.

The appointments mark the biggest restructuring effort by the two lenders and underscore HSBC’s push to integrate Hang Seng Bank following the privatisation which became effective on January 26 2026.

HSBC took Hang Seng Bank private last year, consolidating its control over the lender amid its worsening bad debt, and as part of a broader group effort to simplify its corporate structure and boost operational efficiency.

Metro Bank weighs £2bn acquisition of Aldermore

UK lender Metro Bank is considering a possible £2bn purchase of fellow UK challenger bank Aldermore, which has been put up for sale by its South African owner FirstRand.

According to reporting by Sky News, Metro Bank is among several prospective bidders for Aldermore, although it has yet to decide whether to make an offer.

Lloyds Banking Group and Shawbrook have also previously been named by the news organisation as possible bidders.

FirstRand put Aldermore up for sale in April after estimating that compensation linked to the UK’s car finance mis-selling scandal could cost the business around £750mn.
