AstraZeneca declined to comment, while Bristol Myers Squibb did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside regular business hours.

The proposed combination would bring together two oncology powerhouses, raising the prospect of significant antitrust scrutiny. AstraZeneca’s market capitalization stands at approximately $263 billion, while Bristol Myers Squibb is valued at around $133 billion, according to Benzinga. Together, they would rank as the world’s fourth-largest drugmaker by market value.

The deal would mark a major expansion of AstraZeneca’s presence in the US market, a strategic priority for CEO Pascal Soriot, who has led the company for 14 years. During his tenure, AstraZeneca’s share price has more than quadrupled, outpacing the FTSE 100 index and its main British rival GSK.

Last year, AstraZeneca announced plans for a direct US listing, aiming to capitalize on stronger valuations in the US market while maintaining its London listing. The potential merger comes about a dozen years after AstraZeneca successfully fended off a takeover attempt by larger US rival Pfizer.

Bristol Myers Squibb, with a $133 billion market cap, faces looming patent expirations on some of its biggest products, including the blood thinner Eliquis and the cancer drug Opdivo, which together account for about half of its sales. The company has been working to offset those losses with newer products such as the blood cancer treatment Breyanzi, the skin cancer drug Opdualag, and the heart drug Camzyos.

Last week, Bristol Myers reported quarterly sales of $13 billion, its highest ever, driven by demand for those newer therapies. AstraZeneca’s second-quarter results, also reported last week, showed continued strong demand for its cancer and rare disease drugs. Cancer treatments accounted for about $25 billion in 2025 sales, nearly half of the company’s total, followed by cardiovascular, renal, and metabolism treatments worth about $12 billion.

The merger structure has not been determined, but it would likely involve a mix of cash and shares, according to the report. The deal would surpass AstraZeneca’s $39 billion acquisition of Alexion in 2021, its largest to date.

If completed, the merger would be one of the largest in pharmaceutical history, reshaping the competitive landscape in oncology and beyond. However, regulatory hurdles could be significant, given the combined company’s dominant position in cancer treatments. The deal also raises concerns in the UK about major companies shifting their focus abroad, following AstraZeneca’s recent elevation of its New York listing.

For investors, the potential merger signals a new era of consolidation in the pharmaceutical industry, as companies seek scale to navigate patent cliffs and invest in next-generation therapies. Bristol Myers has also been enhancing its drug discovery capabilities through strategic AI partnerships, including a collaboration with Anthropic, which could benefit from AstraZeneca’s strong oncology research.

While the talks are still early-stage and could collapse, the prospect of a $400 billion pharmaceutical giant has captured the attention of markets and industry observers alike.

UK drugmaker AstraZeneca has held exploratory talks with US rival Bristol Myers Squibb about a potential merger that…

[20662
11153,40798,40801,15586,40802,11316,29341
post-95959","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-astrazeneca","tag-astrazeneca","tag-bristol-myers-squibb","tag-eliquis","tag-financial-times","tag-opdivo","tag-pascal-soriot","tag-pfizer
["GET
