The Rolls-Royce (LSE: RR) share price has had a strong week, and Thursday’s (30 July) half-year results gave investors something to celebrate. <\/p>\n
Not only did the business deliver a significant jump in profits, but management raised full-year guidance across every major financial metric simultaneously. So, what did the numbers actually say? <\/p>\n
What the H1 2026 results showed <\/p>\n
The first half of 2026 was another period of strong delivery across all three divisions. Here are some of the headline figures: <\/p>\n
Underlying operating profit: \u00a32.5bn (vs \u00a31.7bn in H1 2025, up 47%). <\/p>\n
Operating margin: 22.5% (vs 18.1% in H1 2025). <\/p>\n
Return on capital: 22% (vs 18.9% in H1 2025). <\/p>\n
Free cash flow: \u00a32bn (vs \u00a31.6bn in H1 2025, up 25%). <\/p>\n
Net cash: \u00a32.1bn at 30 June 2026. <\/p>\n
All three divisions improved their operating margins year on year: Civil Aerospace to 25.3%, Defence to 21%, and Power Systems to 20.3%. <\/p>\n
The company appears to be firing on all cylinders, and management’s response to the strong performance was telling. <\/p>\n
Guidance raised across the board <\/p>\n
The most significant element of Thursday’s update wasn’t the H1 numbers themselves, but rather what management chose to do with them. Full-year 2026 guidance was raised across two key metrics: <\/p>\n

With a forward price-to-earnings (P\/E) ratio in the high 30s, the market continues to pay a growth premium. It’s significantly more expensive than the likes of BAE Systems that trades at 24 times forward earnings. However, I think Thursday’s results go some way to justifying it. <\/p>\n
We have unlocked new growth opportunities across the Group and created a resilient and diversified portfolio, with three strong businesses that can respond to changes in the external environment with agility and pace. A strong start to the year enables us to raise our guidance for 2026. <\/p>\n

What could still go wrong? <\/p>\n
Despite the positive update, there are still risks. After all, the company’s forward P\/E ratio leaves little room for disappointment.\u00a0 <\/p>\n
That disappointment could come in the form of lower engine flying hours for its civil aerospace division, particularly if conflict continues to rage in Europe and the Middle East. <\/p>\n
Supply chain threats remain ever-present, while the dynamic political situation in the UK could create policy and regulatory risks in key sectors like energy and defence. <\/p>\n
My verdict <\/p>\n
In my view, Thursday’s results represent exactly the kind of update that validates a long-term investment case. <\/p>\n
A 47% jump in operating profit, margins improving across all three divisions, and a guidance raise on key metrics is a genuine statement of intent from a management team that has transformed this business. <\/p>\n
