{"id":9659,"date":"2026-04-08T15:09:29","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T15:09:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/9659\/"},"modified":"2026-04-08T15:09:29","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T15:09:29","slug":"north-korea-using-elite-rugby-to-entice-english-teachers-from-britain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/9659\/","title":{"rendered":"North Korea using elite rugby to entice English teachers from Britain"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\t\t\tWednesday 08 April 2026 4:00 pm<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\u00a0|\u00a0\u00a0Updated:\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\tWednesday 08 April 2026 3:32 pm\n\t<\/p>\n<p><img width=\"742\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/GettyImages-1634983478-e1775657697904.jpg\" class=\"media \" alt=\"GettyImages 1634983478 depicts a significant moment in a recent news event, capturing key elements of the unfolding story.\" fetchpriority=\"high\" loading=\"eager\" decoding=\"sync\"  \/>\t\tNorth Korea is looking to attract English teachers by enticing them with rugby\t<\/p>\n<p>North Korea is looking to attract British English teachers by enticing them to the dictatorial state with the promise of elite rugby contracts.<\/p>\n<p>A social media account that features a similar recruitment drive for Chinese rugby has posted an advert, seeking rugby players for the People\u2019s Democratic Republic of Korea (North Korea)\u2019s Pyongyang Reds team.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPyongyang Reds RFC is recruiting players for the 2026 autumn season,\u201d the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DWktUndEfgW\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">China_Rugby_Recruitment<\/a> Instagram account said, stating that \u201call positions, social and elite\u201d were available.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[The] package includes: A full-time job teaching English at a local school (no teaching qualifications or experience needed); competitive monthly salary and food ration package; flight allowance provided by employer; and playing competitive rugby in [the] Pyongyang Cup and DPRK Cup competitions.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Rugby in North Korea?<\/p>\n<p>The account, which appears to feature videos relating to China featuring South Africa\u2019s Rugby World Cup-winning <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/C6z6XtpA2aS\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Springbok Faf de Klerk<\/a> and promotes Chinese teams Beijing Ducks and Shenzhen Pirates, said potential players should hold passports from one of: South Africa, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityam.com\/pwr-rugby-opens-door-to-british-and-irish-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">Great Britain<\/a>, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland, USA or Canada.<\/p>\n<p>Former England winger Jonny May was offered an invitation to visit the country in 2017 after showing an interest in Kim Jong Un\u2019s state.<\/p>\n<p>The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, which sets <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/foreign-travel-advice\/north-korea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\">travel risk statuses<\/a>, \u201cadvises against all but essential travel to North Korea The level of tension on the Korean Peninsula remains high\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The government organisation adds: \u201cWhile daily life in the capital city, Pyongyang, may appear calm, the security situation in North Korea can change quickly with no advance warning about possible actions by the authorities. This poses significant risks to British visitors and residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe North Korean authorities have previously detained foreign nationals for allegedly violating local laws and have denied them access to support from their governments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>North Korea competes at the Asian Games and won 39 medals at the 2022 Hangzhou games in China.
