{"id":96794,"date":"2026-08-04T03:02:17","date_gmt":"2026-08-04T03:02:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/96794\/"},"modified":"2026-08-04T03:02:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-04T03:02:17","slug":"britains-construction-slowdown-deepens-as-industry-warns-of-deindustrialisation-london-business-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.europesays.com\/britain\/96794\/","title":{"rendered":"Britain\u2019s construction slowdown deepens as industry warns of \u2018deindustrialisation\u2019 &#8211; London Business News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"90\" data-end=\"332\">Britain\u2019s construction supply chain has warned that the government risks undermining its own ambitions to revive manufacturing and accelerate housebuilding unless it restores business confidence and provides greater certainty over investment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"334\" data-end=\"634\">In an open letter to Chancellor John Healey, the Mineral Products Association (MPA) said falling demand for key construction materials had left the industry unwilling to invest in new capacity, threatening the foundations of Labour\u2019s plans to build 1.5 million homes and re-industrialise the economy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"840\">The warning follows fresh data showing ready-mixed concrete sales fell 9.3 per cent in the year to June, while mortar sales\u2014a closely watched indicator of new housing starts\u2014declined 5.1 per cent.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"842\" data-end=\"1047\">Paul Adeleke, the MPA\u2019s chief executive, said domestic cement production had fallen to levels last seen in the 1950s, while ready-mixed concrete <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/retails-summer-of-disappointment-continues-into-autumn-as-in-store-sales-record-flat-growth\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49453\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sales had retreated to volumes not recorded<\/a> since the 1960s.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1049\" data-end=\"1123\">He warned that prolonged <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/weak-industrial-data-and-retreating-yields-weigh-on-the-euro\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49454\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weakness was already eroding industrial<\/a> capacity.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1356\">\u201cPlants are being mothballed, drivers are being taken off the road as trucks sit idle and skilled people are being made redundant,\u201d he said, adding that there was \u201ccurrently zero <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/london-business-confidence-rebounds-as-firms-ramp-up-growth-plans\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49449\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">confidence to invest<\/a> in people, sites or equipment\u201d.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1358\" data-end=\"1608\">The downturn has been particularly acute in London, where ready-mixed concrete sales have fallen 27 per cent over the past year and remain more than half below 2022 levels, reflecting <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/crude-oil-gains-modestly-but-weak-demand-dampens-medium-etrm-outlook\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49450\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">weak demand<\/a> from both residential and commercial construction.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1610\" data-end=\"1882\">The association argues that rising energy costs, planning delays, regulatory burdens and <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/wti-starts-2025-with-a-bullish-movement-driven-by-economic-expectations\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49448\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economic uncertainty continue to suppress private investment<\/a>, even as major infrastructure projects such as HS2, Sizewell and offshore wind developments provide pockets of resilience.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1884\" data-end=\"2033\">The industry is also concerned that recent cancellations of road projects and uncertainty ahead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/the-significant-events-in-the-global-economy-over-the-past-week-25\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49446\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">autumn Budget<\/a> could further weaken confidence.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2035\" data-end=\"2294\">The warning presents an early test for Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/burnham-faces-fury-as-channel-crossings-surges-by-thousands-on-his-watch\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49447\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Burnham\u2019s<\/a> industrial strategy.
