Britons have been warned to enjoy their favourite comfort food while they can, as farmers reveal Britain\u2019s potato crop is being pushed to the brink by relentless heat and drought.<\/p>\n
The humble spud \u2014 a staple of millions of dinner plates \u2014 stops growing when temperatures climb above 30C, leaving farmers battling to protect crops that are struggling to develop.<\/p>\n
After months of extreme weather, with temperatures repeatedly soaring beyond the danger point, growers fear the nation could face smaller harvests, shortages and rising prices.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve been chucking water on them, but in this heat they\u2019re not growing. It\u2019s like watering a corpse,\u201d said Jim Wayman of 3Ms, one of East Anglia\u2019s biggest potato-growing businesses and a major supplier to supermarkets<\/a> including Aldi and M&S.<\/p>\n Mr Wayman warned that farmers were facing impossible demands from retailers<\/a> expecting consistent-sized produce while crops were suffering from conditions beyond their control.<\/p>\n \u201cWe\u2019re being accused of scaremongering, and the big retailers are saying their customers expect<\/a> a certain standard of size \u2014 but we\u2019re saying we can\u2019t do it,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Potato market analyst Cedric Porter delivered<\/a> a stark message to consumers: \u201cEat your spuds while you can.\u201d<\/p>\n The warning comes after July became the driest month ever recorded<\/a> for England and Wales, with rainfall levels plunging to historic lows. England received just 6.5mm of rain, while Wales recorded<\/a> 9.3mm, leaving some areas with less than 1mm throughout the entire month.<\/p>\n But the crisis extends far beyond potatoes. Farmers fear the wider autumn harvest could be damaged, threatening crops including carrots, wheat and oats.<\/p>\n National Farmers\u2019 Union chief executive Tom Bradshaw warned that cereal yields could be \u201cvery, very poor\u201d this year, with farmers struggling to access enough water for irrigation and livestock producers running short<\/a> of grass for winter feed.<\/p>\n He called for urgent investment in water security<\/a>, including more farm reservoirs and flexible water licences.<\/p>\n
