Four arrests have been made after two brothels were uncovered in Oldham<\/a>. Closure orders have been issued for properties on Balfour Street and Miriam Street after officers attended the houses on Monday (July 27) and Tuesday (July 28).<\/p>\n

Residents, councillors and partner agencies had made reports of suspicious activity at the homes. According to police, men were seen arriving during the day and night, staying for a short period before suddenly leaving soon.<\/p>\n

Greater Manchester Police<\/a> said the activity had caused ‘significant distress’ to neighbours. On Monday, neighbourhood officers team attended an address on Balfour Street where they found a brothel.<\/p>\n

A man attempted to flee police via the rear of the house but was quickly detained. Two people were arrested on suspicion of controlling prostitution for gain.<\/p>\n

A closure notice has been left at the property on Balfour Street <\/p>\n

A 48-hour closure notice was authorised and, following an application to the court, a three-month closure order has now been granted.<\/p>\n

Officers then attended an address on Miriam Street on Tuesday evening where two women were arrested and bailed.<\/p>\n

It is now a criminal offence to enter or remain in either property during the period of the closure orders. Investigations continue.<\/p>\n

Neighbourhood Inspector for Oldham South & West, Amie Whitehead, said: “We’re committed to addressing the issues that matter most to residents, and these closure orders show that we will act on information provided by our communities.<\/p>\n

“These two premises had a significant impact on people living nearby, with men attending the addresses throughout the day and night and loitering outside neighbouring homes while waiting to enter.<\/p>\n

“Residents told us this behaviour was causing considerable distress within the community and affecting their quality of life.<\/p>\n

“We’ve responded to reports, worked with partners and gathered evidence to take enforcement action, and have now secured closure orders to prevent further criminality and protect the local community.<\/p>\n

“I would like to thank residents who came forward with information. Community intelligence is vital in helping us identify and address this type of offending.”<\/p>\n
