The potential shortfall could cost UK farmers up to \u00a3390 million and leave 2026 as the poorest harvest since detailed records began in 1984.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Tom Lancaster, land, food and farming analyst at the ECIU, said Britain\u2019s agricultural <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/uk-bioethanol-industry-at-risk\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49697\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">industry risked<\/a> entering a \u201cclimate doom loop\u201d as extreme conditions increasingly damage productivity.<\/p>\n<p>Read more related news:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/uk-facing-food-shortages-including-potato-supplies-which-will-affect-chips-and-roast-potatoes\/\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">UK facing food shortages including potato supplies which \u2018will affect chips and roast potatoes\u2019<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cAt the start of spring, farmers were hopeful of a better year, but the dry April and July and record-breaking heat have left farmers facing down the barrel of a third awful harvest in a row,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The latest estimates from the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board suggest cereal yields are set to <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/ftse-falls-to-its-lowest-level-in-almost-three-months-amid-the-autumn-budget\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49700\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">fall well below normal levels<\/a>. If the forecasts are confirmed, the UK cereal and oilseed harvest would drop to around 19.5 million tonnes \u2013 lower than the previous <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/hotter-eurozone-inflation-stronger-growth-and-record-low-unemployment-wipe-out-bets-for-a-50bp-cut\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49694\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">record low<\/a> in 2020.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Farmers fear the consequences will eventually be felt by shoppers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Northamptonshire farmer Ben Aveling warned that supermarkets may turn to cheaper imports rather than paying more for British produce.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">\u201cAll that will happen is that we will have less UK produce available and less being sold,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The impact is already being seen across the <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/confectionery-food-maker-mars-prepares-for-growth-in-multi-billion-pet-industry\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49696\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">food industry<\/a>. Restaurants, <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/lidl-to-open-first-ever-pub-after-licensing-row-forces-rethink\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49701\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pubs and supermarkets have been forced<\/a> to source more lettuce and broccoli from Spain and the Netherlands because of Britain\u2019s extreme weather.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Wholesale <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/gold-prices-surge-as-trumps-bold-leadership-drives-economic-and-geopolitical-shifts\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49698\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">prices have surged<\/a>, with tomatoes up by more than 60 per cent, iceberg lettuce rising 90 per cent and potatoes increasing by more than 40 per cent.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/londonlovesbusiness.com\/world-cup-fever-saves-britains-pubs-as-restaurants-sink-under-cost-pressures\/\" data-wpil-monitor-id=\"49702\" data-penci-link=\"internal\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">pressure is not limited to Britain<\/a>.
