Michael Bunting and Craig Berube just got one more public vote of confidence after Toronto’s ugly season ended outside the playoff picture.

Bunting said it has been a long time since the Leafs have not been in a playoff spot there.
Then he got to the part Toronto fans will grab onto. He said the Leafs have such good pieces over there that they will be able to bounce back next season.
That is not a blind compliment either. Bunting added that they have the firepower and the team to do it.
Those words hit because the Leafs did not just miss. They looked disconnected, thin in key moments, and too often unsure of what kind of team they really were.
So when an ex-Leaf says the bones are still there, it lands differently.

And from a Leafs perspective, that is the only hopeful argument that still feels believable. No one is going to buy another summer speech built on patience and vibes alone.
But talent still matters. Star power still matters. If Toronto gets cleaner structure, better buy-in, and a harder edge around the same core, then the bounce-back case is real.
Bunting probably understands that better than most. He played in this market. He knows how quickly a season can get swallowed by noise once things stop rolling.
He also knows this team is not empty. Whatever went wrong, it was not because Toronto had nothing to work with.
That is why his quote is worth more than a throwaway headline. It is not proof the Leafs are fixed.
It is a reminder that people outside the room still look at the roster and see enough there to believe this season was a collapse, not a dead end.
For Toronto, that may be the most useful distinction of all right now.
