Stephen Eustaquio scored deep into stoppage to lift Canada to a 1-0 win over South Africa in a Round of 32 match in the World Cup at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., on Sunday.
The Canadians reached the Round of 16 for the very first time at a World Cup.
Eustaquio received the ball on the edge of the box, and drilled his box past diving goalkeeper Ronwen Williams in the first knockout-round match of the competition.
South Africa, which had seemed content to play for extra time and a possible penalty kick tie-breaker, made a few furious but unsuccessful attempts to level before the final whistle.
The Canadians will meet the winner of the Netherlands-Morocco Round of 32 encounter on July 4 in Houston for a spot in the quarterfinals.
“It’s about the two years we’ve been together,” Canada coach Jesse Marsch told the team in a huddle after the final whistle.
“Think about how we talked about sticking to the plan … you guys showing your character. You guys are Canadian heroes here.”
