THOROLD, Ontario – Austrian-based Voestalpine Railway Systems has announced plans for a new facility for the construction of special trackwork in Thorold after entering into a long-term agreement with Canadian National.
Through newly established subsidiary Voestalpine Railway Systems Nortrak Canada (vaRSN Canada), the company will provide Canadian-made special trackwork. The new facility is expected to be fully operational by fall 2027 and, with support from the Province of Ontario, will provide new employment opportunities for management and skilled trades in the Niagara region.
“We are excited to build on our decades-long relationship with CN and are committed to building railway infrastructure locally, facilitating the mobility of goods and people across Canada,” vaRSN Canada CEO Ludwig Freytag said in a press release. “This strategic investment will expand overall production capacity to serve our customers throughout North America more effectively.”
The new facility will improve logistics, reduce lead times, and enhance responsiveness for Canadian customers, the company said.
