It’s time to get cheeky.
After a six-year hiatus, the unapologetically brazen group show Boobies and Wieners is back for its eighth outing, taking over One More Life Gallery this May with exactly what the title promises. Presented in partnership with Hot Art Wet City, the exhibition brings together nearly 100 local artists in a single small Main Street space, all united by a shared commitment to the human form in its most unfiltered state.
This is not a show that tiptoes around nudity, it jumps straight in. Expect a full spectrum of bodies, parts, and interpretations that range from playful to provocative, with nothing particularly interested in being “tasteful” or discreet. Viewer discretion is advised, but also, maybe a sense of humour.
The show’s legacy traces back to Hot Art Wet City’s earlier run as one of Vancouver’s more irreverent art spaces, known for programming that leaned weird, accessible, and proudly unpretentious.
If anything, the anonymous testimonials attached to the show say it best. One person calls it their favourite exhibition. Another admits they cannot be seen anywhere near it due to their day job. A third simply writes, “Yesssssssss!!!!” which, honestly, covers the spectrum.
Hosting duties fall to One More Life Gallery, a relatively new addition to Main Street (located at the City Centre Artist Lodge) that has quickly built a reputation for community-minded programming and giving artists room to take up space, sometimes literally. Founded by Flavia Chan and Daniel Yang, the gallery’s ethos leans toward accessibility and connection, which makes it a fitting home for a show that invites people to drop the pretence along with everything else.
