A large fire broke out in Edmonton’s southwest neighbourhood of Cameron Heights on Tuesday afternoon that left two homes gutted and a third badly damaged.

In an email to Postmedia, Edmonton Fire and Rescue Services confirmed reports that they attended a structure fire near Cameron Ravine Way and Cameron Ravine Drive at 4:18 p.m. on Tuesday.

Crews arrived on scene at 4:24 p.m. and found the fire had spread to a second property. They immediately called for additional units.

EFRS officials confirmed that two additional properties sustained exposure damage and the fire was brought under control at 7:51 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

“The fire quickly got into the roofs of both houses … quickly (two) houses started collapsing with the roof and the walls, and even at this time, we still haven’t been able to enter the residences,” said Edmonton fire district Chief Geoff Boulton on Tuesday.

Boulton said fire crews were able to make contact with both homeowners and both houses were unoccupied by people at the time of the blaze. Boulton confirmed one of the houses had three cats and a dog, but fire crews haven’t been able to enter the residence yet to locate the pets.

At the time of the call, five units were dispatched, but three more trucks were added, and then three more upon arrival.

Boulton said the blaze was extensive and fire crews worked to save as much of the properties as they could.

“I’m proud of our guys for working super hard,” said Boulton.

“It took a significant number of firefighters to get the fires under control. We’re going to be here over the next 48 hours. Because of the significant collapse, nobody will be entering the structures. More than likely we’ll be dealing with it for days. It’s going to be a long process.”
