Powerful fires can loft smoke high into the atmosphere, where stronger winds carry it hundreds of miles — spreading haze and lowering air quality across major U.S. cities far from the flames.
How are the Canadian wildfires impacting the U.S.?
According to the Canadian Wildland Fire Information System, there are more than 860 active wildfires in Canada as of July 16. The country is currently at a National Preparedness Level 4, meaning that wildfire behavior “is significant” within multiple jurisdictions and the “demand for resources is high.”
The atmosphere acts like a highway: Once smoke rises into the right “lane,” it can travel long distances fast. Some plumes stay aloft and simply dim the sky, but under the right conditions, smoke can mix down to the surface and become a health concern.

The color-coded gauge ranges from green to maroon, with green being good and maroon being hazardous. The closer to maroon the meter gets, the more pollution is in the air and the more dangerous it is for the general public to be outdoors.
