On Saturday at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Canada’s men’s 4x100m relay team had to wait a bit longer than anticipated before leaving Scotstoun Stadium with silver.

The team of Aaron Brown, Jerome Blake, Brendon Rodney and Andre De Grasse crossed the line second in 38.11 seconds, just behind Australia, who won gold in 38.07. Nigeria finished third in 38.12.

Canada was initially disqualified because officials believed Brown had stepped on the lane line during the handoff to Blake. Team officials appealed with their own video, which showed his foot stayed inside the lane, and the disqualification was overturned. A second appeal delayed the official result, but Canada’s silver was eventually confirmed. “It’s a relief,” De Grasse told CBC Sports. “Four hours later, finally, we get a chance to stand on the podium and get our medal.”

Athletics Canada coach Glen Gilbert told CBC that he had always been confident his team would win. “It was our video that overturned this,” he said. “The video that they have [organizers] was inconclusive.

Brown, Blake, Rodney and De Grasse have earned an impressive collection of hardware over their years competing as a relay team. They won Olympic gold in Paris in 2024; Brown, Rodney and De Grasse were also part of Canada’s bronze-medal team at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and Brown, Blake and De Grasse were on the team that won silver at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

Women add another silver

Canada’s women also reached the podium in the 4x100m relay. Sade McCreath, Marie-Éloïse Leclair, Frédérique Chiasson and Audrey Leduc ran 42.76 to win silver behind Jamaica, which took gold in 42.65. Trinidad and Tobago was third in 43.07.

It was Canada’s first Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s 4x100m relay since 1986. The result also continued a strong season for the women’s sprint relay program, which won silver at the World Athletics Relays in Botswana in May. “I think we can say this year that whoever we put on the track, we can deliver and get a medal,” Leduc told CBC Sports.

The women’s relay silver came on the final day of athletics in Glasgow. Canada finished the track and field and Para athletics program with 16 medals: four gold, seven silver and five bronze.
