The 2026 Toronto International Film Festival (September 10-20) will showcase a record eight animated features, several of which have already premiered at the Cannes and Annecy Film festivals in May and June.
The animated titles are:
Ervin Han and Raul Garcia’s The Violinist, winner of the Cristal for Best Animated Feature at Annecy
Louise Bagnall’s feature Julián (Cartoon Saloon)
Leah Nelson’s Tangles (will also screen in competition at Ottawa Intl. Animation Festival)
Xu Zao’s Light Pillar
Sébastien Laudenbach’s Viva Carmen
Phuong Mai Nguyen’s In Waves, which will debut on Netflix later this year
Louis Clichy’s Iron Boy (Le Corset), winner of the Special Jury Prize at Cannes, Jury Prize and Audience Award at Annecy
Julien Chheng’s Mu Yi
A number of animated shorts will also debut in the festival’s six Shorts Cuts programs:
Niki Lindroth von Bahr’s The End (Sweden, France, Denmark)
Julie Charette’s The Comet (Canada)
Alexandre Siqueira’s Terminal (Portugal, Spain, France)
Amanda Strong and Pamela Post’s Haboolm Ksinaalgat (Soul Catcher) (Canada)
Ronni Shalev’s2:Love (Belgium, France, Israel)
Sameh Alaa and Robin Vouters’ The Day I Smoked a Cigarette with My Father (France, Egypt, Belgium)
Anna Mantzaris’ Please (Sweden, France, Czech Republic, Norway, Finland)
