Country and rock collided when Chris Stapleton made a surprise appearance during Guns N’ Roses’ concert at Toronto’s Rogers Stadium, joining the legendary rock band for a powerful rendition of Bob Dylan’s classic “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”

The surprise unfolded on Wednesday night (Aug. 5) when Stapleton took the stage alongside Axl Rose, Slash, and the rest of Guns N’ Roses to perform the iconic Bob Dylan song, which the band famously covered in the early 1990s. 

Fan-shot videos quickly began circulating online following the concert, capturing the rare crossover between one of country music’s biggest stars and one of rock’s most iconic bands.  

Although the collaboration may have surprised concertgoers, Stapleton’s gritty voice proved to be a natural match for “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”

Originally written by Bob Dylan for the 1973 film Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid, the song has been covered by countless artists over the decades. Guns N’ Roses helped introduce it to a new generation with their own version, which became a staple of the band’s live performances and remains a fan favorite today.  

A Friendly Exchange Between Guns N’ Roses and Stapleton 

As the performance came to an end, Axl Rose acknowledged Stapleton’s appearance with a friendly farewell, telling the country star, “We’ll see ya tomorrow.” The remark referenced the fact that Stapleton was scheduled to headline his own concert at Rogers Stadium the following evening, making the surprise cameo a fitting way to kick off his time in Toronto.  

Stapleton has built a reputation for moving effortlessly between country, rock, blues, and Southern soul throughout his career. His collaborations have included artists from a wide range of genres.  

His surprise performance alongside the band is a full-circle moment for the country rocker who opened for the band in 2016 during a show at Nashville’s Nissan Stadium. Stapleton also collaborated with Slash for his 2024 blues covers album, Orgy of the Damned.
