Both Jason Hernandez and Robin Fraser have publicly said they like the look of this Toronto FC roster. That certainly doesn’t mean they’re done adding to it.
Toronto FC have reportedly emerged as a possible destination for Peruvian international Renato Tapia as the veteran midfielder weighs a return closer to home less than a year after joining Al Wasl in the United Arab Emirates.
Peruvian outlet América Deportes reported this week that Tapia is considering leaving the Middle East in search of a move back on this side of the pond, with TFC identified as one of the clubs in the mix. The report only stated that the 30-year-old “is on the radar” of TFC, although no formal offer has been confirmed nor reported elsewhere.
Tapia only joined Al Wasl last summer after departing Spanish side Leganés, signing a two-year deal with the Dubai-based club. His arrival was viewed as a real coup for the UAE side given his experience in both La Liga and the Eredivisie.
The defensive midfielder has long been one of Peru’s most important players, earning 95 caps for his country since 2015 while also featuring for Feyenoord, Celta Vigo and CD Leganés. His ability to shield the back line and dictate tempo from deep would address an area TFC has looked to strengthen in recent transfer windows. It could also allow Jose Cifuentes to play a more advanced role in Fraser’s midfield.

Tapia has remained a regular starter for Al Wasl this season despite the club’s inconsistent form — they were bounced by Cristiano Ronaldo’s Al Nassr from the AFC Cup last week. Tapia came off the bench in that 4-0 loss.
Recent reports in Peru noted that he continues to log heavy minutes and remains an important part of Al Wasl’s midfield.
With the summer transfer window approaching, the experienced midfielder is the latest international name to be linked with a move to TFC and certainly one to keep an eye on.
