Gov. Gen. Louise Arbour will be in Medicine Hat for a few days next week to take in the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.–CP FILE PHOTOThe Governor General of Canada, the Right Honourable Louise Arbour, will be travelling to Medicine Hat early next week to attend the 2026 Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.
This will mark Arbour’s first visit to the city, and the first time a Governor General will attend the Special Olympics Canada Summer Games.
As part of her time in Medicine Hat, Arbour will deliver remarks at the opening ceremony, meet with coaches, families and friends, as well as support athletes in various events as they compete.
She will attend a series of divisioning games Tuesday for bowling and softball, before cheering on athletes at basketball, soccer and bocce ball.
Wednesday will see Arbour at soccer, golf and athletics competitions, as well as presenting medals for the 25-metre wheelchair final, 1,500-metre final and 10,000-metre final. Arbour will finish her visit to the Gas City by attending rhythmic gymnastics, swimming and powerlifting competitions on Thursday.
Throughout the week, Arbour will also attend other aspects of the event, such as the Healthy Athletes screenings, the friends and family receptions and learning about the next generation of coaching for Special Olympics athletes.
She will also take this opportunity to thank the many volunteers whose dedication is making the Games possible.
