The Canadiens are still looking to fill two specific needs.

And in a surprise twist, Alexis Lafrenière’s name is once again being mentioned as a possible trade target.

He’s back in the trade rumor mill.

Sources confirmed on The Sick Podcast that the Canadiens are still searching for two pieces:

A second-line centre and a right-shot second-pair defenseman.

Those are the two holes Kent Hughes has been trying to fill for some time. Two key positions that could push the club to another level.

With that in mind, JD Lagrange reviewed several possible candidates.

The analyst took a closer look at players the Canadiens could target through a trade.

Lafrenière’s name was among those mentioned.

Alexis Lafrenière adds top-six appeal but misses Montreal’s biggest needs

As a former first-overall pick, Lafrenière would clearly be an interesting option for a general manager like Kent Hughes.

Adding a player like Lafrenière would give the Canadiens’ core more support.

Another top-six winger would give Martin St-Louis more options. It could also give Ivan Demidov another talented linemate, whether that’s Lafrenière or Juraj Slafkovsky eventually moving back to the second line.

Still, the biggest needs remain at centre and on the right side of the blue line.

No matter how talented he is, adding another winger wouldn’t directly address either of those priorities.

Hughes is clearly keeping an eye on every possibility.

Lafrenière is one option among several.

What do you think about the possibility of bringing Alexis Lafrenière to the Montreal Canadiens?

He quietly recorded 57 points last season in New York.
