Pierre McGuire took a moment to praise one of Kent Hughes’ best moves with the Montreal Canadiens.

According to McGuire, signing Lane Hutson to his contract ranks near the top of Hughes’ accomplishments as Canadiens general manager.

It’s one of his best moves, in McGuire’s view.

McGuire discussed the deal on The Sick Podcast.

It’s another strong endorsement for an agreement that has already drawn praise across the league.

McGuire isn’t the first to applaud the contract.

Several models and analysts rank it among the best deals in the National Hockey League. It’s an incredible bargain for the Canadiens.

The numbers speak for themselves.

Lane Hutson is signed with the Montreal Canadiens for eight years at $8.85 million per season, through the summer of 2034.

Dom Luszczyszyn’s model at The Athletic also ranked the contract first across the NHL as the league’s best bargain.

Lane Hutson’s extension gives the Canadiens a long-term contract advantage

The Canadiens also ranked second in contract efficiency, trailing only the Carolina Hurricanes, and Hutson’s extension played a major role in that result.

Pierre McGuire was clear.

By getting the deal done early instead of waiting for salaries to rise, Kent Hughes may have saved the Canadiens a huge amount of money.

In a league where every dollar matters, this kind of agreement can make a major difference when building a contender.

The more Hutson develops, the better the contract will look. The gap between his true value and his salary could continue to grow over the next several years.

It’s difficult to disagree with Pierre McGuire.

This contract is a masterful move that could benefit the Canadiens for a decade.
