After a two-game rehab stint at Triple-A Worcester, it appears Adley Rutschman’s return to the active roster could be imminent.
Following Sunday’s 4-3 loss Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy announced that the three-time All-Star will be traveling with the team on its upcoming road trip.
“Adley is traveling with us, yeah,” Tracy said. “He’s going to have a workout day with us tomorrow, we’ll assess and see how he feels and go from there.”
Rutschman was acquired from the Baltimore Orioles at last Monday’s trade deadline and has spent his first week with the club working his way back from a pre-existing left wrist injury that has sidelined him since July 20. He began his rehab assignment at Triple-A Worcester on Saturday and in two games with the WooSox went 1 for 5 with two runs, two RBI, two walks and a double.
Though Tracy said Rutschman won’t be activated on Monday, if all goes well it appears likely he could make his Red Sox debut at some point during this week’s four-game series in Toronto.
Tracy also declined to speculate on how the roster might change to accommodate Rutschman and whether the club would consider carrying three catchers. Right now the Red Sox have incumbent Connor Wong and fellow newcomer Jake Rogers, who came over with Rutschman from Baltimore and who is out of minor league options.
