A Calgary police officer was shot twice during a traffic stop near Edworthy Park on Monday, and the suspect, a man police call a known organized crime target, was later found dead in the Bow River.

The officer is in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. His partner administered first aid at the scene, police say. Police have not released his name.

“He is stable. He’s in good spirits. He’s talking to our members,” Insp. Darren Smith told reporters in an announcement later in the day.

Police say the stop happened around 11:45 a.m. in the southwest neighbourhood of Spruce Cliff. Smith said it was a random traffic stop with no prior warning. The reason for the stop is still under investigation.

An occupant of the vehicle stepped out and fired a handgun, striking the officer, police say. The man then fled into the park. Police say he shot at officers and civilians as he ran, whereupon officers returned fire. The shooter carjacked a vehicle, drove until it got stuck, then fled on foot again.

A police helicopter tracked the man from the air. Police say he also shot at the aircraft. Officers found him dead in the Bow River shortly after.

“We do know that he was subject to a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Smith said. “However, we cannot say whether or not any of our officers also struck the offender.”

Smith confirmed the chase at one point saw the suspect and police firing at each other with bystanders close by in Edworthy Park, west of downtown.

“(Officers) were yelling at bystanders to get behind vehicles, telling others to run,” Smith said. “It was very much a chaotic and dynamic scene. I would say it’s out of a movie.”

Shortly after noon police issued a dangerous person alert and told residents to stay indoors. The alert was lifted about 50 minutes later.

More than 100 officers were deployed. ASIRT, the province’s police watchdog, will review the officer’s actions and the man’s death.
