2 beluga whales rescued from shuttered Canadian zoo arrive at Georgia Aquarium

ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) — Two beluga whales rescued from a shuttered Canadian zoo have arrived at Downtown Atlanta’s Georgia Aquarium!

Zephyr, 7, and Balor, 10, are now in the habitat and have met the four other beluga whales, the aquarium said.

“Everything we do now is at their pace – they will begin discovering their new surroundings and getting all the care (and fish!) they need,” officials said in a social media post on Thursday.

The whales came from Marineland of Canada, which closed in 2024 due to a financial crisis and could no longer care for them.

The other belugas are going to Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, SeaWorld San Antonio and San Diego and Spain’s Oceanografic Valencia.
