A Calgary police officer will stand trial for murder in the fatal shooting of two suspects following slow-speed chase on Memorial Drive on May 29, 2023.
Const. Craig Stothard is charged with two charges of second-degree murder in the shootings of Levon Fox, 39, and Wesley Davidson, 46.
A preliminary inquiry into the case began last week. A publication ban prevents evidence given during the hearing from being printed.
Justice Mark Mastel ordered the accused stand trial on the charges on Aug. 18
The inquiry was scheduled for two weeks but wrapped up after six days. A date for trial has not yet been set.
The Alberta Serious Response Team announced the charges on July 15, 2025, more than two years after the deadly incident.
Stothard appeared in Calgary Court of King’s Bench prior to the ASIRT announcement and was granted his release on conditions before the allegations were made public.
Stothard is on leave from the Calgary Police Service, and it is unknown if the time away is paid or unpaid.
He was released from detention the day charges were laid.
The charges stem from an incident three years ago, when Calgary police officers opened fire on a stolen cube van that was involved in a slow-speed chase on Memorial Drive.
The van was being driven erratically, hitting a barricade and a building while multiple officers began tailing the vehicle as it travelled down Memorial Drive.
If convicted of second-degree murder, Stothard would face an automatic life sentence with parole ineligibility set between 10 and 25 years.
