The City of Winnipeg has installed a new rail crossing information system to advise drivers of train activity at three key locations across the city.
Roadside TRAINFO beacons and digital message boards will now flash in advance of rail crossings to alert drivers to train activity. The city says the system is to help motorists decide whether to reroute to avoid delays.
Pandora Avenue at Day Street and Redonda Street as well as on Ravenhurst Street to advise of train activity at the Ravenhurst rail crossing north of Dugald Road — approximately 21 trains per day
East and west of the multiple rail crossings of Marion Avenue between Archibald Street and Lagimodiere Boulevard — approximately 15 trains per day
Intersection of McGillivray Boulevard and Waverley Street to advise of train activity crossing McGillivray at Pembina Highway — approximately four trains per day
The system also allows Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews responding from Stations 2, 3 and 9 to see crossing information on a dashboard installed in their stations, and pushes information to the city’s Traffic Management Centre.
The city says the new alerting system is being funded by a Transport Canada grant and as part of the Marion Street Water Tower District development project, where it is a requirement of the developer to facilitate the movement of first responders through the rail crossing-heavy area.
