Trade talks between the U.S. and Canada collapsed, triggering new 50% U.S. tariffs on a range of Canadian goods, with consumers likely to bear much of the cost. Here’s what to know.
Details: Negotiations between the two sides fell apart after each accused the other of making last-minute changes. “We cannot accept what they’ve offered and we will not give what they’ve asked,” Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said. President Trump in turn called Canada “foolish” for engaging in a trade war. [BBC News]
Canada responds: Carney said Canada will respond with its own duties, beginning Sept. 8. The dollar-for-dollar retaliation would target steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and electronics. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said there were “no new planned talks.” [CBS News]

Nevada wildfire
Around 90,000 people have been urged to evacuate amid a wildfire northwest of Reno, Nevada. The uncontained Hawk Fire was human-caused, officials said. It has so far scorched more than 15,000 acres since igniting on Saturday. [CNN]
Oz vaccines clash
Top health official Dr. Mehmet Oz said that the combined measles, mumps and rubella vaccine, known as MMR, is “not a lethal vaccine,” despite claims made by Trump. Oz said he wanted parents to follow their doctors’ advice, but also have “autonomy.” [CBS News]
Climbing ‘Spider-Man’ takings
After four weeks in theaters, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is poised to oust Titanic from the top five highest-grossing films worldwide. The movie, starring Hollywood sweethearts Tom Holland and Zendaya, has a total domestic gross of $854.9 million. [Entertainment Weekly]
Washington’s IndyCar race
An IndyCar race on the streets of Washington, D.C., was the latest celebration marking America’s 250th birthday. Trump opened the event with a slow lap in the presidential limo and then waved the green flag to kick off the race. See photos. [AP]
