A disturbing video showing an elderly Sikh man being racially harassed in Woodstock has triggered widespread condemnation and renewed concern over rising hate incidents in Canada.
The footage, circulating online, shows the elderly man being targeted in a public setting, prompting calls for stronger action against racism and discrimination.
The incident has been described as deeply unacceptable by community members, who stressed that such behaviour has no place in Canadian society.
Local authorities, including the Woodstock Police Service, responded to the incident and are reviewing the case.
“This is not just a Sikh issue, this is a human issue,” responses on social platforms have emphasised, reflecting broader concerns about rising hate-motivated behaviour.
The incident comes at a time when the World Sikh Organisation of Canada is intensifying efforts to address anti-Sikh discrimination across the country. The organisation is set to host a panel discussion in Surrey alongside the release of its report, Understanding and Addressing Anti-Sikh Hate in Canada, funded by the Canadian Race Relations Foundation.
Based on a survey of more than 1,600 Sikh Canadians, the report finds that 80% believe anti-Sikh hate has increased in recent years, while 65% report experiencing verbal harassment. It identifies racism, xenophobia, and misinformation as key contributing factors.
