Canada’s retaliatory tariffs could raise costs in Connecticut

  • August 25, 2026

HARTFORD, Conn. (WFSB) – Canada is responding to U.S. tariffs with tariffs of its own, a move that could raise prices on Canadian goods sold in Connecticut.

The increase could affect everything from lumber used to build homes to hockey sticks.

Canadian goods such as lumber and siding have already been increasing in price. Lumber yards say they are anticipating even higher costs because of the new tariffs. The increase comes during a busy time of year for builders.

Rising costs could also be felt at the ice rink. Andrew Petrin, of Hockey One in South Windsor, says most hockey sticks today are made in Southeast Asia, not Canada. He says the larger price increases will be in custom gear that some players need.

“One area we may see a lot of it is in goalie. So goalie pads, gloves, blockers, that kind of stuff. And an increasing portion is custom, so that [will] be affected,” Petrin said.

Carrie Walker and her son Timothy felt the impact directly as hockey season looms.

“That’s probably why we bought gear last week. I think it goes into effect next week,” she said.

Some businesses may choose to absorb the costs temporarily.

Some are also hoping that Trump will imposed tariffs and then remove them.
