An investigation revealed the absence of critical safety measures, such as a carbon dioxide sensor or alarm system, which could have alerted employees to the danger. Following the incident, Maple Lodge Farms installed a permanent sensor to prevent future occurrences. The company pleaded guilty to failing to take reasonable precautions to protect workers and was penalized in the Provincial Offences Court in Brampton, including a 25% victim surcharge earmarked for a provincial fund aiding crime victims.
