Toronto International Film Festival: Titles we’re excited for

  • August 28, 2026

EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (WEAU) – WEAU’s Maddy at the Movies is covering the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), taking place September 10-20. The robust program, which you can find here, has quite a few titles Maddy is hoping to see. She breaks a handful of them down below!

“Trash Mountain”

Celebrating its world premiere at TIFF, “Trash Mountain” is a dramedy about the relationship between siblings (Caleb Hearon, Zoey Deschanel) , returning home to Missouri to clean out their father’s house after his passing.

This one has been on my radar since I first heard about it–I’m a big fan of the drama’s star, comedian Caleb Hearon, and have been listening to his podcast “So True.” It doesn’t matter who he has on the show, I could listen to Hearon talk about anything and everything. I’m excited to see him in a more dramatic, lead turn, having only seen him as the flamboyant Palmer in “Sweethearts.” My fingers are crossed that I can get my hands on this one!

"Cheyenne"“Cheyenne”(Courtesy of TIFF)

“Cheyenne”

Also world premiering, “Cheyenne” is a documentary detailing the world of women’s bronco riding, a sport that they were excluded from until recently.

Documentary is a drama I don’t frequent often, but always like when it’s a subject I’m curious about or interested in. “Cheyenne” scratches this itch; I’d like to see what the experience is like for women in that industry, since they’ve been excluded for so long.

"HALF"“HALF”(Courtesy of TIFF)

“HALF”

Action film “HALF” takes you on a road trip through the desert, accompanied by two twin half-vampires. Chaos ensues.

I’m a big Indian cinema fan (I worship at the altar of Shah Rukh Khan), but haven’t really delved deeply into Indian horror; I think I’ve only really seen two movies, “Stree” and “Stree 2,” that would fall into that category. I’m excited to expand my experience in that area a bit, and “HALF” would be a good way to do that!

Ken Russell's "The Devils"Ken Russell’s “The Devils”(Courtesy of TIFF)

Ken Russell’s “The Devils”

Newly restored, director Ken Russell’s “The Devils” is a religious horror classic about a Catholic priest who is accused of witchcraft.

I watched “The Devils” for the first time back in 2021, and remember liking it. It’s one of those movies that checks a lot of my boxes, and I think I’ll like even more on rewatch. And now there’s a new restoration? Time for a rewatch!

"Low Lies The Land"“Low Lies The Land”(Courtesy of TIFF)

“Low Lies The Land”

Documentary “Low Lies The Land” follows three Italian families facing doubt in their family business: winemaking.

Very similar vibe here for me as with “Cheyenne”; I think this one just seems intriguing. I don’t know anyone personally in the wine business, but do enjoy a glass here and there and would like to see what it’s like behind the scenes. I think this one has the whole “family legacy” element too which would be interesting to explore.

Maddy is working on reaching out to publicists to secure screeners. She’ll publish a full recap near the end of the festival!
