Donald Trump regularly posts images and memes generated by artificial intelligence, but he did not share a picture depicting him dressed as a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer arresting Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. The supposed post, which spread online as the two countries entered a new stage of their trade war, does not appear in live or archived versions of the US president’s social media.
“Well Canada. Where do we go from here? Article 5?” asks an August 26, 2026 X post sharing the alleged screenshot, which appears to reference NATO’s collective defense principle (archived here).
The attached image purports to show a Trump Truth Social post captioned: “Oh Canada!”
In the supposed post, Trump is sporting the red uniform of Canada’s national police — sometimes called Mounties — while guiding Carney in handcuffs.

The visual spread across X, Reddit, Instagram and Facebook, where it was amplified by former professional hockey player Theo Fleury, whom AFP has repeatedly fact-checked for sharing other misinformation.
The alleged screenshot also circulated in different languages, such as Chinese and Czech.

Canada walked away from tariff negotiations with the United States on August 21, launching the two countries into a new stage of their trade war. Carney said in a statement that the terms offered by Washington were “unfair, uneconomic, and called into question the reliability of any deal” (archived here).
Trump has spoken publicly and taken to Truth Social to excoriate the US-Canada trade relationship — sometimes while making inaccurate claims.
The US president has a reputation for sharing altered or AI-generated images, including about Canada. Since the trade negotiations broke down, for example, he shared several altered maps to promote renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America” (archived here).
He previously shared two altered images with the caption “Oh Canada!” while floating the idea of Canada becoming the 51st US State (archived here and here)
He did not, however, post the caption with an AI-generated image of himself arresting the Canadian prime minister.
A search of live and archived versions of Trump’s Truth Social account yielded no matching results. Factba.se, an interactive database tracking the president’s public remarks and social media activity, also does not record any posts with the ” Oh Canada!” caption and an image of the Mountie getup (archived here).
The Hive Moderation AI-detection tool assessed that the image of Trump in the RCMP outfit was likely generated with artificial intelligence.

AFP has frequently debunked fabricated Truth Social posts, which have often touched on US-Canada relations since the start of Trump’s second term.
