ROLAND DALE CHARLES RUHR
Peacefully, on August 20,2026, at Tuxedo Villa personal care home, Roland (Rolly) Ruhr, aged 92 years, beloved husband of Shirley, passed away.
Besides Shirley, Rolly is survived by his children, Vikki, Chris, Kathy, and Melissa, son-in-law, Ryan, and grandchildren, Derrick, Brianna, Matthew, Justin, and Tyler.
Rolly was born in Killaly, Saskatchewan and came to Winnipeg to study at United College. He obtained Honours in Economics and Philosophy. Later, he obtained his Masters at the University of Toronto. While at United College, he met Shirley and they were married in 1958. Even though Rolly and Shirley made their life in Winnipeg, Rolly never stopped being a Saskatchewan Rough Riders fan. After graduating, Rolly spent several years teaching Economics at United College and the University of Manitoba. After teaching, Rolly worked for the Manitoba Department of Natural Resources.
Rolly loved to be active. At the family cottage at Victoria Beach, you could find Rolly either on the tennis courts or the golf course. He also regularly played tennis at the Taylor Tennis Club and squash at the Winter Club. At the Winter Club, Rolly and Shirley enjoyed TGIF nights and Saturday evening Dinners and Dances. Rolly also loved music. When the kids were young, Rolly would play guitar as they sang along to standards such as Buffalo Gals and Frankie and Johnny. His children grew up listening to folk music and I think we all think of Dad when we hear a Peter, Paul, and Mary song. His love for music carried on to his later years, when Rolly taught himself to play the piano.
Sadly, Rolly was diagnosed with Dementia in 2014. The family thanks the staff at Tuxedo Villa for the wonderful care they gave him.
There will not be a formal service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
