Max Domi is about to enter a new season of his life — and it has nothing to do with sports. The Toronto Maple Leafs forward has announced he’s getting engaged to his longtime girlfriend, Estelle Phillips.
The couple took to Instagram with their own separate posts over the weekend, with the proposal taking place around Phillips’ birthday. In her post, she included a photo of herself sitting in Domi’s lap while wearing a veil. She also included a picture of herself hugging the 31-year-old athlete from behind while in a field.
“Best birthday ever,” she penned the caption to her post, adding a light blue heart emoji.
On his own account, Domi shared a picture of his new fiancée flashing her engagement ring to the camera with a bright smile. He also added a photo of himself kneeling in the same field, with Phillips wrapping her arms around him and their dog, Orion, posing with them.
“I love you so much,” the NHLer captioned his post.
In the comments, people shared their shock over the surprise proposal. Others — including athletes and fellow WAGs (wives and girlfriends) of other hockey players — also expressed their excitement over the upcoming wedding.
“OMG!! Congratulations, guys!” Paola Anderson, the wife of Montreal Canadiens star Josh Anderson, wrote.
“Yes, sir! Congrats, guys!” former Maple Leafs right winger Mitch Marner penned.
“Yeah, Max! Congrats, brother,” NFLer Christian McCaffrey added.
Max’s father, Tahir “Tie” Domi, also shared a post with sweet message about his son and soon-to-be daughter-in-law. The former Maple Leafs right winger also included several photos of himself and his son over the years.
“Ten years of memories, laughter, challenges, growth and choosing each other have brought you to this beautiful moment,” the retired athlete began in his post. “Your relationship has stood the test of time watching you two grow up together, build a life together and choose each other. I don’t think I’ve ever seen two people more ready for this.”
The 56-year-old father-of-three also shared that it felt like “yesterday” that Max was still a young boy.
“Now I get to watch you build a life and future with the woman you love. I couldn’t be more proud of the man you’ve become and the love you two have shared and grown over all these years,” Tie continued, adding that Phillips has long been part of the family.
“She’s family in every way that matters, and has been for a long time now. Watching this day come has been one of the great joys of being your dad. I love you more than words can say and I’m so incredibly happy for you both. Love, dad.”
The comments section was full of love, with Max offering his own “love you” to his father. Phillips also thanked Tie for the “sweetest words” and the collection of “precious” photos from her fiancé’s childhood.
“Truly the perfect couple! Each of you [are] incredibly special and together unstoppable! So excited to be part of your lives!” Heather Domi, Tie’s wife and Max’s step-mother, wrote.
“What beautiful pics and memories! Amazing!” one person shared.
“Sweetest message! We’re so happy for them and excited for all of you,” another chimed in.
