Canadian PM Mark Carney Says Trade Talks Can Resume When The Americans ‘Stop Doing Memes’

Americans need to “stop doing memes” and get serious for trade talks to resume, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said.

The remarks came Tuesday as Carney spoke to reporters and ripped the United States for “throwing shade.”

The two countries have been locked in a bitter trade dispute since talks broke down last month, prompting the United States to assess 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods and Carney to pledge he’d match the levies “dollar for dollar.”

“Our message, first off, our plan has always been first and foremost standing up for Canada,” Carney told reporters Tuesday, before adding, “…There’s a positive opportunity that has always existed with the United States for a mutually beneficial trade deal that respects Canadian sovereignty.

“…And when the Americans stop doing memes, stop throwing shade, stop trying to be tough and start being serious about having those discussions we can have those discussions. Look it’s not constructive but that’s their democracy.”

The jab came after President Donald Trump signed an executive order officially changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America and took a number of digs at the nation’s northern neighbor via AI-made Truth Social posts, including one featuring a bizarre army of mutant Canada geese with automatic rifles and Trump-style hair.

Trump then followed up the mutant geese video with an AI-generated video of himself kicking over a sign reading “Lake Ontario” and planting a Lake America sign in its place.

Last week, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick claimed Carney “used” the failed trade talks for his own own political gain before Canada’s upcoming elections.

“I met with their trade minister, [Dominic] LeBlanc, at least 10 times in the last month. I spoke to Mark Carney twice in the 24 hours before this ended. Twice,” Lutnick emphasized, before predicting the Canadians would come back to the negotiating table once their elections are over.
