EDMONTON — The Alberta Golden Bears opened their season in dominant fashion, blanking the Calgary Dinos 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Foote Field.
Veteran forward Justin George scored twice in the second half to go along with an absolute stunner from Gio Artenduaga in his first career U SPORTS contest.
Despite Calgary holding a slight 9-8 edge in total shots, Alberta proved far more lethal with their opportunities, converting five shots on target into three goals to move to 1-0-0 on the year. Along with the goals from George and Artunduaga, defender Dylan Marple and forward Prince Amanda each recorded an assist. In goal, Trystan Read turned aside all three shots he faced to earn the shutout, the fifth of his Golden Bears career.
For Calgary, Nabeel Naboulsi and Joey Plenzik led the team with two shots apiece, while Nick Carr and William Omoreniye each put a shot on target. Goalkeeper Hany Shafie stopped two shots in the loss.
Calgary controlled much of the early tempo, generating several quality chances, including a stoppage of a William Omoreniye effort by Alberta’s backline in the 43rd minute. However, Alberta broke the deadlock in the final seconds of the first half when Artunduaga sent a rocket over the head of Shafie.
The Golden Bears carried that momentum directly into the second half, as George headed in a corner kick from Prince Amanda. George struck again unassisted in the 71st minute, burying his second goal of the match to extend the advantage to 3-0. A physical contest that featured eight total yellow cards saw Calgary push late for a response, but Read made key saves against Carr and Plenzik in the closing minutes to preserve the clean sheet.
The Golden Bears will host the Mount Royal Cougars tomorrow afternoon to cap off home-opening weekend.
