CALGARY – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns showed enough firepower in the second half to spoil the University of Calgary Dinos women’s rugby team’s home opener, escaping McMahon Stadium with a 21-12 victory on Saturday.

Calgary opened the scoring in the 12th minute when second-year lock Keira Andasol Dubyk broke through a wall of Pronghorns, giving the Dinos a 5-0 lead. Neither side found the try zone again before the break, with Calgary’s defence holding firm through a tightly contested opening 40 minutes.

Lethbridge flipped the script early in the second half. Sydney Wollbaum scored the Pronghorns’ first try in the 47th minute, with Jayda Morrison converting to make it 7-5. Fewer than 10 minutes later, Millie Teskey added another try, and Morrison’s conversion stretched the lead to 14-5.

The Dinos answered right back. Bomi Lawal ran onto a ball booted into the try zone by Allysen Stachiw to score, and Stachiw’s conversion cut the gap to 14-12, giving Calgary a chance to reclaim the lead. But the Pronghorns had the final say three minutes later, as Emily Stewart scored her own try and Morrison added her third conversion of the day to make it 21-12, a margin the Dinos couldn’t overcome by the final whistle.

“As a young squad, they’ve got to learn that when you’ve got the opportunity, you’ve got to be able to shut the game out and finish it,” said Dinos head coach Simon Chi. “We’ve still got to stick to the process.”

The Dinos will be back in action Friday, Sept. 11, when they travel to face the University of Alberta Pandas. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.

Lethbridge will travel to Victoria on Saturday, Sept. 12.
