The Cavorite X7 might become the first hybrid-electric VTOL (vertical takeoff and landing) officially proven to withstand the infamous harshness of Canadian winters. Horizon Aircraft is eyeing all-weather certification for its flagship aircraft through a comprehensive, innovative testing project supported launched via a joint government-industry initiative.
Several VTOL and electric fixed-wing aircraft on the market aim to become sustainable alternatives for regional air mobility, but few are focused on year-round capabilities as much as Horizon Aircraft, the aerospace company behind one of the first-ever hybrid-electric VTOLs, the Cavorite X7.
The main idea is to fill the gap left by conventional helicopters, which are often unable to operate simply because of weather challenges, including heavy snow and extreme temperatures. In Canada, where remote communities are largely dependent on helicopters for primary services and essential goods, this is a harsh reality.
That is why, according to Brandon Robinson, co-founder and CEO of Horizon Aircraft, the Cavorite X7 was envisioned and developed from the start to be compatible with Canadian winters. This VTOL’s unique fan-in-wing design gives it an advantage in this direction, not just compared to conventional helicopters, but also to open-rotor eVTOLs.
The Cavorite X7’s transforming wings reveal the 12 lift fans during the vertical takeoff, and then hide them during forward flight (when they are covered by sliding panels). This unique design primarily helps to increase speed and range, but it also supports efficient operations in bad weather conditions.
Horizon Aircraft is currently entering the second phase of the all-weather eVTOL project in partnership with Flight Centre of Excellence (dba Certification Center Canada,”3C”) and the University of Toronto (“UofT”). The first phase focused on the technologies themselves, including ice-detection and electro-thermal coating; this second phase moves to actually applying and testing these technologies for the Cavorite X7.
The project is called CRYSTAL (Canadian Research Yielding SusTainable All-weather Lift system) and it’s funded through an INSAT (The Initiative for Sustainable Aviation Technology) grant. UofT is developing the specific anti-icing technologies while Horizon Aircraft is providing the test VTOL for these technologies.
Lastly, 3C brings its certification expertise, as the only Transport Canada Approved Independent Flight Test and Certification Design Approval Organization (DAO).
The project was officially announced in the Fall of 2025 and has now reached its second and most important phase. At the end of it all, the Cavorite X7 should be ready for the official all-weather or Flight Into Known Icing (FIKI) certification.
Cavorite X7 is the upgraded, seven-seat hybrid-electric VTOL version of the original five-seat Cavorite X5. Hybrid-electric propulsion in conjunction with the unique fan-in-wing design support a range of up to 800 km/500 miles (mid-load, with fuel reserve) at a 450 kph/250 knots cruise speed. Together with the generous seven-seat configuration, these numbers indicate the Cavorite X7 as a promising solution for sustainable, efficient regional air mobility.
