Two Ottawa residents are facing a combined nine charges after a multi-unit drug trafficking investigation led to the seizure of cocaine, opioids, methamphetamine and more than 18-thousand dollars in cash.
The Ontario Provincial Police East Region Community Street Crime Unit began investigating suspected drug trafficking in the Lanark County area in June 2025.
On Wednesday, Aug. 26, eight search warrants were executed at residences and vehicles in Carleton Place and several locations in Kanata.
Police say approximately 677 grams of suspected cocaine, a large quantity of suspected opioid pills and 10 grams of suspected methamphetamine were seized.
Officers also seized 18-thousand-555 dollars in Canadian currency, four vehicles, jewellery, 12 cellular phones, three digital scales and a GPS tracker.
The investigation involved multiple OPP units, along with the Ottawa Police Tactical Unit and Provincial Guns and Gangs East Region.
Thirty-six-year-old Miguel Ortiz-Umana of Ottawa faces five charges, including possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, two counts of possession for the purpose of trafficking other drugs, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over five-thousand dollars.
Twenty-six-year-old Harley Smith of Ottawa faces four charges, including possession for the purpose of trafficking cocaine, possession for the purpose of trafficking other drugs, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and possession of proceeds of property obtained by crime over five-thousand dollars.
Police say Ortiz-Umana was remanded into custody pending a bail hearing at a later date.
Smith was released from custody and is scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Perth on Sept. 21.
The charges have not been proven in court.
