Vancouver police started a vehicle chase through the downtown core on Monday after officers allegedly saw a distraught female passenger in a vehicle.

Officers were patrolling near East Hastings Street and Dunlevy Avenue when they first noticed the occupied BMW with an Alberta licence plate, according to a news release from Vancouver police Tuesday (Sept. 29).

“Inside, a front-seat female passenger appeared visibly distraught,” the release says.

Police said officers, who were worried for her safety and well-being, turned on the emergency lights and sirens for a welfare check.

However police said the vehicle “immediately sped away” and “due to the perceived threat to the passenger, a police pursuit was authorized.”

Multiple police vehicles pursued the BMW into downtown Vancouver, where police say the suspect “drove at high speeds, weaved into oncoming traffic, and showed a complete disregard for public safety.” Photos and video of the chase were posted to social media as it happened.

The police chase ended near Waterfront Station that included a “high-risk takedown.”

Police say no one was injured during the chase and subsequent arrest.

A 44-year-old Alberta man was arrested. Police say he could face possible charges of orcible confinement, drug possession and dangerous driving.

Police said the female passenger is cooperating with investigators.

There is an ongoing investigation.
