Stolen peacocks, Pete and Hilda, have been safely returned to their owner after being found just west of Edmonton, along Highway 16 near Duffield, say RCMP.

Two people rescued the plucky birds found April 26 inside a crate along the highway, about 65 km west of Edmonton, Parkland RCMP said in a Wednesday news release. After seeing Tuesday news reports about the peacocks that had gone missing inside a stolen truck, the bird rescuers contacted Smoky Lake RCMP who helped facilitate their return to the owner.

The truck was stolen from Stony Plain with Pete and Hilda on board shortly before they were found abandoned along the highway inside their crate.

“A happy ending! Smoky Lake RCMP were delighted to assist in bringing Pete and Hilda back to their owner,” Smoky Lake RCMP Sgt. Anita Doktor said in the news release.

Police thank the rescuers for stepping in and caring for the birds before they were reunited with their owner.
