Montreal police have arrested a 17-year-old in connection with a hit and run on Friday that killed an 18-year-old cyclist in the city’s Ahuntsic-Cartierville borough.
In a news release Tuesday, police said the teen was arrested around noon in the borough.
Because the youth is a minor, they cannot be identified.
Police said the suspect is expected to appear in youth court on Wednesday to face several charges that were approved by the Quebec Crown prosecutor’s youth division.
The charges include manslaughter, criminal negligence causing death, dangerous driving causing death, failure to stop at the scene of an accident causing death, and fleeing from a peace officer.
The crash happened at around noon at the intersection of Jeanne-Mance Street and Henri-Bourassa Boulevard W.
The cyclist, identified as 18-year-old Isaac Larivée, was attempting to cross the intersection when police said he was struck by a motorist travelling at high speeds on Jeanne-Mance.
The vehicle involved in the collision was located nearby, but the driver had fled the scene before the arrival of emergency services.
According to Quebec’s police watchdog, the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI), prior to the crash, an unmarked Sûreté du Québec (SQ) patrol car observed a vehicle committing a possible violation of the Highway Safety Code.
