Maybe sleepy ‘ol Kerrisdale breeds on-screen talent. Celeste Ziegler doesn’t have the same profile as Seth Rogen (though they did share the same weed dealer back in the day and she did have a role in The Interview), but the actress has made a name for herself with roles on shows like Shoresy and Upload. She’s also a practicing real estate agent. And while she doesn’t technically reside in the area anymore, she grew up in Kerrisdale and still frequently visits her mom who lives in her childhood home.

“I spent every day here,” she says, standing in front of Kerrisdale Arena, where she practiced figure skating until she was 17 years old. “It still feels like home.”

It has changed a lot; obviously Red Onion used to be right over there—miss it a lot. But Minerva’s is the OG. I have a lot of friends that come into the neighbourhood just to go there, and now that they’ve added Barra 41 beside it, I’ll go hang out there. I brought my partner there recently and he was like, “Whoa, it’s so busy.” It’s an institution.

Hot pot from Big Way Hot Pot. Whenever I’m coming down with something, that’s my spot.

Underrated gem

My mom’s older now, so she really likes going for high tea, and the Secret Garden is the best for that.

Thing you’d change

I miss the mom-and-pop shops, you know, like every time I come back and another one’s gone. And they did a great job with the Arbutus Greenway, which used to be a railroad track with overgrown weeds and stuff; let’s keep that going and make the whole area a bit more outdoorsy, there are a lot of great parks.

Popular misconception

People think it’s snobby, that everyone has their nose up. And honestly, when you talk to people, they’re so friendly. They’re very open and receptive. It’s an affluent neighbourhood, yes, but I don’t think people act like that. You get that more in other neighbourhoods.

Favourite quiet spot

Maple Grove Park. Unless it’s the summer, and even then, there’s quiet spots.
